Afraid

Afraid

Dorothee Soelle

We are afraid of religion and of the community that goes hand in hand with it. It is difficult to control.... To pray, to experience common aspirations, to share with one another our fears as well as our hopes--such acts we find constricting...indeed quite unappealing.

Prayers and songs and rituals such as lighting candles, distributing bread, kneeling, and embracing are quickly disparaged. The intellectual can easily dismiss them with a contemptuous smile and the observation that religion, even when practiced to a small extent, is a fraud. We are afraid of the kind of experiences that challenge our sense of security.
