Limitless

Limitless

N. Gordon Cosby

God is a creator. God's being, God's life is the source of all that is.

God is constantly bringing into being that which was not, that which is new. Newness is constantly breaking forth in God, through God. The flow of energy in life continues. The flow is limitless--will never give out.

Coming from the limitless depths of God's being, the flow is infinite, inexhaustible. So you don't have to husband your resources and dribble them out. You can be lavish and prodigal. You will be embarrassed by the new riches being poured into your life.

Don't you know there is a limitless flow of life--a superabundance of love and caring? You simply cannot exhaust it. It may be tough learning how to touch that current, how to get into that stream, to feel the flow and power of it, to be carried by it, but one thing is certain: the stream is there. And it is limitless.

Daily Meditation: Coming Home

Henri Nouwen Society - Daily Meditation

Coming Home

In the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), there are two sons: the younger son, who runs away from home to an alien country, and the older son, who stays home to do his duty.  The younger son dissipates himself with alcohol and sex; the older son alienates himself by working hard and dutifully fulfilling all his obligations.  Both are lost.  Their father grieves over both, because with neither of them does he experience the intimacy he desires.

Both lust and cold obedience can prevent us from being true children of God.  Whether we are like the younger son or the older son, we have to come home to the place where we can rest in the embrace of God's unconditional love.

MINemergent - In the Beginning God

In the beginning God

John Kulaga

In the beginning God is the one,

That created heaven and earth, and gave it form.

Void and deep darkness that had never been faced,

The spirit of God moved, and the waters were placed.

Now let the light shine, and God called it the day,

Darkness God called night, the divided way.

Firmament of heaven will bring the rain.

Land emerged fertile with coastal plain.

Then mountains and valleys, God seen a great worth,

He brought forth vegetation, and called it the earth.

The sun ruler of the day, and the moon for the night.

These two rulers will bring forth the light.

God spoke to the waters, and made fish in the seas,

Placed wings on the birds, so they fly with great ease.

God blessed them and said, "be fruitful and multiply with your kind,

Now I'll bring forth the beast, cattle and swine".

And God checked it for goodness, all that He'd done.

Well pleased in himself, He said to His Son,

"Let us make man in our image and likeness, and give dominion to rule,

Over fish, fowl, and cattle, that would be cool".

So He created male and female, from the dust of the land,

To multiply, replenish, and subdue all the works of His hand.

Now is the seventh day, but He completed on the sixth,

The foundation of the world, has now been fixed.

And God said, "I will bless the seventh day, sanctify it and rest,

Generations in heaven and earth should all give me their best."

Daily Meditation: Taking Up Our Crosses

Taking Up Our Crosses

Jesus says:  "If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him ... take up his cross and follow me" (Matthew 16:24).   He does not say:  "Make a cross" or "Look for a cross."  Each of us has a cross to carry.  There is no need to make one or look for one.  The cross we have is hard enough for us!  But are we willing to take it up, to  accept it as our cross?

Maybe we can't study, maybe we are handicapped, maybe we suffer from depression, maybe we experience conflict in our families, maybe we are victims of violence or abuse.  We didn't choose any of it, but these things are our crosses.  We can ignore them, reject them, refuse them or hate them.  But we can also take  up these crosses and follow Jesus with them.

Body logic

Your body is not your enemy and is not out to get you; it's just trying to protect you. Actually, your body has a brilliant logic that makes perfect sense. All you have to do is understand your body's logic and work with it as opposed to struggling against it.

Barricaded

Barricaded

Sue Monk Kidd

One of the misconceptions about journeying to a deeper intimacy with God is that we don't need other people. We may want to get wrapped up in the coziness of "me and God," but of course this is a perverted spirituality and doomed from the outset.

One of the worst illusions...would be to try to find God by barricading yourself inside your own soul.

Daily Meditation: Downward Mobility

Downward Mobility

The society in which we live suggests in countless ways that the way to go is up.    Making it to the top, entering the limelight, breaking the record - that's what draws attention, gets us on the front page of the newspaper, and offers us the rewards of money and fame.

The way of Jesus is radically different.  It is the way not of upward mobility but of downward mobility.  It is going to the bottom, staying behind the sets, and choosing the last place!  Why is the way of Jesus worth choosing?  Because it is the way to the Kingdom, the way Jesus took, and the way that brings everlasting life.

MINemergent - The Illusion of Safety

The illusion of safety

We rely on faith and community and God to shield us from the trauma of living in a world full of danger and violence. We invest heavily in creating a 'safe place' and end up with an illusion of safety by welcoming only those who are like us, those who comfort us, and avoid (even resent) conversations which cause us anxiety.

Listening and Love

Listening and Love

Morton Kelsey

We can love only those human beings to whom we listen, and love is the heart of the spiritual way. No one can ever learn to listen to God who has not first learned to listen to human beings. The one who cannot listen cannot love either another or God.

Daily Meditation: Spiritual Courage

Henri Nouwen Society - Daily Meditation
[photo]

Wednesday June 27, 2012

Spiritual Courage

Courage is connected with taking risks.  Jumping the Grand Canyon on a motorbike, coming over Niagara Falls in a barrel, or crossing the ocean in a rowboat are called courageous acts because people risk their lives by doing these things.  But none of these daredevil acts comes from the centre of our being.  They all come from the desire to test our physical limits and to become famous and popular.

Spiritual courage is something completely different.  It is following the deepest desires of our hearts at the risk of losing fame and popularity.  It asks of us the willingness to lose our temporal lives in order to gain eternal life.
