Our Summer Newsletter!

Greetings from the Executive Director
Dear Friends,

Here in the northern hemisphere, we are heading into summer. But we know that the friends of the Henri Nouwen Society stretch right around the globe and though our seasons may differ, our hunger for spiritual nourishment is the same worldwide.

I have always felt that our role at the Henri Nouwen Society is to offer this circle of seekers the spiritual feast that Henri Nouwen discovered himself — the good news of our belovedness. My hope is that you will be excited and encouraged by all the things we are offering this season and have planned for this year.

Thank you so much to this amazing community and for all you do to equip us to share Henri Nouwen’s wisdom with people hungering for meaning in our world today.
With Gratitude,

Karen Pascal
Executive Director, Henri Nouwen Society
HOT OFF THE PRESS
April 2023 celebrated the release of Henri’s latest book Ukraine Diary by Orbis Books. With a forward by Henri’s former student, Ukrainian Greek Archbishop Metropolitan Borys Gudziak, this previously unpublished work is like a time capsule: a message penned in the past that speaks volumes to a modern audience.

"Henri is deeply in touch with the Slavic soul, its long suffering, and the national identify of the Ukrainian people. He still speaks prophetically about Russian imperialism, the gospel call to peacemaking, and prayerful resistance in a troubled
and fearful land." — Michael J. Christensen
CHRISTMAS DAY IN AUSTRALIA
On Christmas day, our Peacework webinar, featuring well-known activists Martin Sheen, Fr. John Dear and host Karen Pascal, was shown on SkyNews TV in Australia and viewed by thousands. Reflecting on Henri Nouwen’s contribution to the peace movement, Martin Sheen says,

"The idea that we are loved is the most powerful, revolutionary idea in the history of the human race. It’s a necessity for our humanity that we accept the reality that we are loved and have been loved from the beginning."
FATHER TO THE FATHERLESS
We are delighted to announce an exciting new collaboration with Prison Fellowship to reach inmates with the much-needed good news that God, the Father, loves and cares for them. The Father to the Fatherless project will help incarcerated men explore healing in relation to their earthly fathers and inspire them to be the father they long to be for their children. The seed for this project came from South Africa where Denis Jacobs used Nouwen’s best-selling The Return of the Prodigal Son in his ministry to prisoners and wrote to share the positive impact he was witnessing. We’re now excited to be working with Denis to develop a brand-new video series and workbook to accompany inmates on this life-changing journey. Set to launch in Fall 2023, we’re already dreaming of sharing Father to the Fatherless in prisons all over the world! READ MORE
FREE DAILY MEDITATIONS...en Español!
January marked the much-anticipated launch of our Daily Meditations in Spanish. More than 1500 people have already signed up to receive them! With about 500 million Spanish speaking people across the globe we’re thrilled that Henri’s words of hope and comfort can now reach them in their mother-tongue. Many of you have helped support this new initiative and for that we say - ¡Muchas gracias! To sign up or pass it on to friends: henrinouwen.org/meditaciones/
Coming - NEW SUMMER MEDITATION SERIES!

With over 11,000 views of our 2022 series “From Fear to Love: Spiritual Grounding in Anxious Times,” it is clear that we are hungry to deepen our spiritual lives. In our new 2023 series, Robert Ellsberg, friend and publisher of Henri Nouwen, shares a new spiritual practice that he describes as: reading holy lives as sacred text. Following the thread of a living gospel in the stories of contemporary mystics, Ellsberg invites us to discover the sacred text in our own stories. It will premiere on our YouTube channel from July 15- August 25, 2023. Plan on joining us and share the invitation with other spiritual seekers! AN INVITATION TO LEAVE A LEGACY

The Henri Nouwen Society is committed to ensuring that each new generation is introduced to Henri’s vision of spiritual transformation. By making a planned gift in your will, you can participate in sharing Henri’s legacy. Robert and Margaret Jonas made this decision, and had this to say: “Henri was our good friend.... He affirmed every person as the beloved of God and he invited everyone to choose this identity, especially in the midst of confusion, fear, or pain. We [are grateful for] the Henri Nouwen Society for honoring his memory, sharing his wisdom, and shepherding his publications. We are glad to include the Henri Nouwen Society in our estate plans.” Please contact admin@henrinouwen.org for more information on making a legacy gift.
